We believe that once a student feels comfortable in the boat, the paddling skills are much easily absorbed, and it is a lot more fun!
This Kayak Immersion course is a fusion of whitewater skills and a Bend experience. Learn the basics of river kayaking from expert instructors and enjoy lodging at a beautiful B&B downtown, mere walking distance to shops and breweries. Stay an extra day and take a brewery tour, and embrace the opportunity to use Stand Up Paddle Boards in the evening.
Your guides love to show off the area almost as much as they love to share whitewater. With rapids easily accessible to parking and right by the classic Old Mill District, this provides the perfect setting to start your whitewater journey, while also enjoying one of the hottest brewery and outdoor destinations in the West.

Bend Kayak School is a woman (and mother) owned business that began as a way to organize getting youth outside and onto the river. We have expanded to offering adult classes, while using our experience with teaching kids to continue to create a learning environment for our students that is based on trust, comfort and solid education, creating comfort in the learning environment so that students create a solid foundation in the knowledge needed to become a river runner.
We have partnered with a locally, and woman, owned tourism operator in India to offer an amazing experiences that speak to our love of all things water. This operator is the first to have started taking tourists on adventures when Arunachal opened to limited tourism 12 years ago. Her son, and our guide, Nino Dai, has spent a couple of decades guiding rivers around India and leading treks to the most remote part of the country.
Our passion for rivers means that environmental work and education has become a core piece of our mission. We source locally for goods and services when possible, partnering with organizations that share those values. In addition, a portion of our rental program proceeds are donated to a local nonprofit that supports families in need. Our international trips are environmentally motivated and we require that all exchanges with local culture are respectful, striving to have a minimal impact on the people of the places that we visit.
Our guides have many years of experience guiding and teaching, ACA certifications and Swiftwater Rescue training are required for lead kayak instructors, as well as ongoing training on teaching techniques and river rescue.
My three girls have spent the summer with Bend Kayak and they have had the most amazing experiences. The instructors quickly became part of our village, filling the girls with confidence through their safe tutelage, while instilling in them a delicate balance between having fun and pushing themselves to get farther towards their goals with the sport. Every time I pick them up from a session they are full of wonderful stories told with bright smiles and happy energy.
Based on past years of observing our son taking lessons from 2 other kayak companies we saw how Bend Kayak School advanced his and his groups’ skills and knowledge directly in the river and with confidence. Our son’s enthusiasm from her instruction prompted us to give it a try. Our first full day lesson was for my husband and me the most valuable time spent in learning how to white water kayak. The owner of Bend Kayak School, and our instructor, was not only extremely knowledgeable and patient, but she knew how to teach the how’s and why’s of safe and fun kayaking to all levels of experience and of all ages. Her approach, that one should feel comfortable in the water, is delivered through good communication of understanding the use of the equipment , safety measures –water exits, rescue, river current dynamics, kayaking skills and paddling techniques all while having fun doing it. It made for a great day and wanting to do more! Another bonus is that Bend Kayak School supplied all the equipment necessary, new this season and top quality. We are now looking forward to river kayaking as a family- THANK YOU!

Where will I meet my guides?
Your guides will greet you at the Robert Fields, Redmond Municipal Airport and transport you from the airport to downtown Bend. If you are driving from Washington or Portland, take Highway 26 over Mt. Hood to Highway 97 into Bend. From California or the coast, take I-5 to Highway 97 and to meet your guides at 5:30 at the bed and breakfast.
What will accommodations be like?
Accommodations are a family-owned downtown Bend bed and breakfast that is warm and inviting, as well as committed to sustainability. Within walking distance to events, breweries and restaurants, it is the perfect place to stay to enjoy a Bend experience. Rooms are based on double occupancy with one Queen bed, and there is one room with two twins.
What if I'm a solo traveler?
Rooms are based on double-occupancy, but if you are a solo traveler you can request your own room for a $150 single supplement, payable directly to Bend Kayak School.
What will the food be like?
There is a beautiful breakfast with as much locally sourced food as possible, in a beautiful dining room with wood floors and chandeliers.
What should I bring?
The weather in Bend can be variable. It may be cold or hot, or both. Having layers and options is ideal. For the river, please bring fleece or wool underlayers. We provide wetsuits and dry tops, but you still need to have a warm non-cotton layer or two underneath for insulation.
How much extra money should I bring?
This can vary greatly, as Bend has a lot of breweries and can have music events in the evenings. A couple of hundred dollars or more could be easily spent, but there is no a need to spend much of anything. If you wanted to enjoy the nature around Bend, and walk downtown to soak at the soaking pools for 5 dollars you could get away with 50 dollars or less.
What if I am scared of kayaking, even though I have always wanted to learn?
Bend Kayak School's instructional style is based on creating comfort and trust in the learning environment. We believe that in order to learn skills you must first feel comfortable and competent at the basics.Because of this, we spend a good amount of time checking in with students, having them do exercises that train their brain to overcome fear and not be in such a state of nerves. We have them do drills to learn how to swim in moving water and practice helping each other get in and out of our boats. These skills are as, if not more, important then knowing how to paddle. We also believe that once a student feels comfortable in the boat, the paddling skills are much easily absorbed, and it is a lot more fun!
Can I cancel the trip?
You may cancel reservations up to 72 hours after the booking is made. After that time period, all modifications/cancellations will be granted solely at the discretion of Bend Kayak School.
